Discourse genre

Genre refers to the type of text, for example, an advert or a novel.  The style of the text, both written and spoken, makes it almost recognizable without even fully reading the text.

Indicators can be the layout or the type of language used.

Examples of written genre include:

  • Novels
  • Advertising billboards
  • Websites
  • Magazines

Examples of spoken genre include:

  • Business presentation
  • Storytelling
  • Teacher language
  • Radio broadcaster
